Re: E3 Tungsten electrode
I'm not concerned with all the scares I use 2% thoriated on steel. I like the way it performs and will continue to use it. I use 2% lanthanated on aluminium holds a taper better. However I'm curious as to what advantages the 4% has, might be useful. Ever used a piece of tungsten and after awile you...

The pink alumina cups can be cleaned up in a bead blaster. Use a file or coarse cloth tape to remove any stuck spatter first.

Re: Lets talk china Tigs?
Chinese are true spartans and minimalists when it comes to electronics, they put maximum minimum into stuff they export cheap. This is why their stuff dies often as it does not have durability reserve. When I studied electronics, and we had to design microchip logic schemes, our tutor told us, that...

I had an instance where I was plugging some holes in an aluminum rad tank with some 1.2 x 18mm diam discs into the hole from a 20mm tube, which had been hit with a 90 deg counter sink to locate the disc. Using a #6 cup with a gas lens was a PITA, always burning the disc back, and this was being don...

Re: Cutting your tungsten?
Certainly..I've been meaning to check electrode density on my lab scale and see how close to the known density of pure W they are..of course this would be comparing same types of differing brands. This all started when one of my sons expressed interest in having a solid lump of tungsten and he foun...

Re: Cutting your tungsten?
What I've learned is snapping can induce fractures that pop the electrode at the worst time.. Like on 100% RT welds. Tungsten electrodes are made from tungsten powder that has been sintered into rod that has nearly the density of elemental tungsten. While it seems a solid, it behaves more like a ce...

Re: silicon bronze bead on mild steel not shiny
Try using AC. It works more like oxy-acetylene brazing / silver soldering, as the HF cleaning action acts like a flux and allows the bronze to flow. Start with the AC balance where you use it for aluminum.
You'll find it's far easier to keep the base metal below its melting point.

Like I said, I'm sure within the recommended range, it's fine, but 2%La has held up better when exceeding it. Zircononiated tungsten held up better on the Syncrowave at 310 than any of them actually, but that was a fellow welders personal stash. The company supplies La/Th/Pure for us to use. Sent f...

Re: Question for the machinists in the group
With an interference fit on the OD, go for a bearing with a C 3 tolerance.
Even if you use a slip fit inner/outer, the C 3 will give better life.

There's two types of zirconiated tungstens , brown (up to 0.4% Zr) and white (up to 0.8% Zr) https://www.millerwelds.com/resources/article-library/selecting-the-right-tungsten-a-critical-issue-to-get-the-full-benefits-of-ac-tig-inverter-welding If the white you have works, holds a stable ball, doesn...

Re: Brass to Bronze repair
If you have a choice of silver solders and fluxes, go for the ones that contains cadmium. That is, if they haven't been banned by the 'elf an safety nazis............
They seem to be far less critical to high temperatures and the flux forming a black scale on the parts, plus they flow better.

The AC cleans the surface ( like the flux when brazing with O /A) Experiment with AC on some scrap AB or steel to see the effect. Re: Tig Aluminum Bronze
Are the plugs flush with the block surfaces? If they are below , break the hole edges slightly.
Try using AC and the pedal only, no pulse, and use the filler wire as per normal welding. 15-20CFH flow rate.
