Re: Cleaning stainless welds

We make a lot of 304 and 316 stainless steel parts for semiconductor processing applications, most parts placed inside ultrahigh vacuum chambers. Cleanliness of the stainless surfaces is super critical. Every part we weld is run through an electropolishing process which uses a mixture of glycolic a...

Re: Cheap Jumbo Pyrex Kit

Just arrived. This is some very high quality junk, I'll tell you that right now! Almost makes it look like I know what I'm doing with all this stuff. I never thought I would buy this, since I couldn't justify the cost of the kit at regular pricing, but I would like to sincerely thank...

Re: Wp 26 torch ..?

Only thing that sucks is that the 26 torch is bulky. I have one but only as a spare, since a water cooled 20 torch is far superior for most everything. Honestly you'd be happier making your own water cooler and switching over to a 20 torch. It's an expense yes, but more importantly an investment.

Re: Cheap Jumbo Pyrex Kit

edit: I just ordered a jumbo kit for my 20 torch, and the whole kit, for all FOUR tungsten sizes 0.040"-1/8", and it came out to LESS than the $100.74. :D I don't even know why I'm buying this stuff, I'm just a math teacher, LOL. Gear is addictive. Surely it makes us better welders! :D Di...

Re: amperage selection with differing walls

You could try "manual" pulse with the foot pedal. I know it's not the same as getting an instantaneous current change with actual pulse capabilities, but you could mimick it as best as you can. If it's a tight space you'll need a long taper on the tungsten, down to a needle point. Get as t...

Just got a hold of Paul @ HTP. For today only he is running a special. Jumbo Pyrex kit in only one tungsten size, 17 or 9 size for $49.95. Just goes to show ya how you should NEVER count these guys out. Always contact them to see if they can get you a better deal on welding stuff. He can also work o...

Re: why water cooling on tig

Water cooling a tig torch will allow you to use a smaller 20-series torch and it will be good up to 250A DCEN, probably a little less on AC depending on how much cleaning action you are running (because it puts more heat into the torch). With a standard air-cooled torch to get to 200A you need a 26-...

Any additional thoughts on the difference in shielding gases affecting the hardness of the weld deposit? Anyone with experience with Silicon Bronze? I have see "Restolad" do some cool stuff on cars with it using a TIG torch in his You Tube videos. He sure seems to know his trade! It works...

Re: TIG vs. MIG for hardness & Silicon Bronze

You are correct on all accounts. Carry on. The only thing I can think of is that the guy who replied to you couldn't really express what he was trying to say. Perhaps he was saying that grinding down a 1/32" tall TIG bead is a hell of a lot "easier" (read: faster) than a 1/8...

Re: Argon Tank Empty?

This applies to fluids. Liquids and gasses are both fluids, and will demonstrate some segregation in an undisturbed environment. Yes, heat (read kinetic energy) keeps them mixed, but not homogenously. The lighter gas will be more concentrated at the top. That's why the oxygen level on Mt. Everest f...

Re: Argon Tank Empty?

No offense but I kinda doubt that - argon is heavier than air & would have mixed with whatever else was in or added to the bottle - whatever problem you encountered there has to be a more logical explanation - maybe post any relevant facts & someone here will get to the issue for you. PS. W...

Re: 304 tube

Did you wire brush it or scotchbrite it? You need to do that then acetone. Did you back purge? I agree with this line of reasoning because any crud that gets caught up in the puddle will simply get taken for a joyride and float on the surface of the weld bead, and right where you terminate the arc,...

Re: Welding stainless exhaust?

You can also use SolarFluxB instead of purging, assuming there is no turbocharger down the line. You will get better welds with back purging, but SolarFluxB would also work as a 2nd best alternative. I've heard of that stuff a few times. Seemed a bit expensive to me. How good does it work? CB have ...

Re: welding stainless steel.

If you use regular carbon steel tig rod on stainless, then the joint will no longer be stainless steel, and thus it will be rust prone, and it will rust. Then that contaminates the surrounding stainless steel and you might end up with a regular steel exhaust. Dont be cheap and just order 0.035 or 0....

Colour codes might be different here as well. @Oscar: Well,...

Re: Tips on welding tubes wanted (and also inside corners)

Welding small tubes is one of the toughest things to do, so as a newb I can see your frustration. It takes hours and hours and hours and tankfuls and tankfuls and tankfuls of practice for you to get it right. There is no substitute for that. Set small goals. Weld only 1/6 or 1/5 of the circumference...
