Yes. XS750 with a XS850 engine rebuilt with higher compression xs1100 pistons, undercut trans, new rods, polished crank, eventually a ported head. Busa front forks and triple. Fun project going on one year. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd94/jcwk12r/yamaha/rearsets.jpg I don't know what to do w...

Re: motorcycle frame bracing

Cool tool. I know I've seen that before but never crossed my mind. It would have been very helpful. Here's the crossbrace tacked and then welded together on the bench. These were the joints with the worst fit up and they came out OK considering... http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd94/jcwk12r/yama...

Re: Boeing 747-8 wire model progress

Awesome!

Could you share your settings and material? any recommendations on wire size, tungsten, filler, amps and technique?
I'm thinking about copying a motorcycle frame in wire and then testing different frame bracings with the model.

motorcycle frame bracing

I have a new respect for people that fit tube up for welding. These 4 tubes took almost a week of cutting and grinding and cursing and throwing away and starting over. Fit up looks good for three corners and OK for one. It's bad at one of the center tube joints. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd...

Re: A/C Tig Machine

I'm like you, I'd love to get a dynasty 280 but can't afford one. particularly since this is primarily a hobby. I'm also not overly brand loyal. I just want to best machine to do the job for the money. I'm local to usaweld who imports the HTP machines. I went to their store and demo'd an invertig 22...

Re: A/C Tig Machine

If you love your everlast, why not get one of their AC Tigs? When I get tired of welding on steel, I'll look to upgrade. I know everyone says to get the best machine once and forget about it, but I'm glad I picked up a nice DC chinese tig to learn on. I have a 1960's 330 a/bp that I never got a chan...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Thanks. No. just wanted to practice. Also, my welds are a little concave so I'd have to build up a little more if I wanted to sand and round the edges.

Re: practicing on 16 gauge tubing

You can straighten by putting in a drill and clamping the other end in a vise and twist it, or hold it with vise grips. Len I've done this with two strands and it works well but does it work with a single strand? if it works out and you get tired of straightening mig wire (I did), I got some .045 a...

Re: practicing on 16 gauge tubing

Don't know if this will help but I find using slightly smaller filler rod than the wall thickness helps with using less amps and less heat for a smaller and sometimes more aesthetic bead. Of course, you run into the possibility of undercutting. if fit up is perfect, I'd use .045. On my round tube sa...

Re: undercutting or underfilling tube joints

I print out the pattern from the tube coping calc on metal geek.com from one of jody's videos. Grind it on the bench grinder and deburr and fine tune with a bastard file. I've gotten pretty good and fast at cutting single joints, but i tried tying three tube together and no good. I'm thinking about ...

I'm just a hobbyist and don't plan on doing this professionally. I mainly want to make sure I make sound welds on my own motorcycle.
I like tig welding so much, though, I want to be as good as I can at it.

Re: undercutting or underfilling tube joints

Thanks for the input. I don't mind getting the thumbs down. I'm still a beginner and learning as much as I can. Yes, the machine is set at 60 but I'm using the foot pedal and no where near that hot. In fact, I tack at 70, do the high side fillet of the weld at 60 and the low side lap at 50. And stil...

Hello! and Thanks, Jody.

Picked up my first tig machine less than 2 months ago and absolutely love it. Your reviews helped me feel comfortable with my decision.

The weekly videos have been the greatest thing since sliced bread for us new welders. Really demystifying things pertaining to welding.

Thank you so much!

undercutting or underfilling tube joints

Jody makes mention of this in one of his videos and I was wondering if anyone could shed more light on this. Practicing to weld mild steel tube for motorcycle frame bracing. 1 1/8" tube, 0.065" wall 60amps DC, 1/16" 2% lanth, 0.035 filler, no pulse, #6 gas lens, 15 cfm 100% argon Alon...

Not that close to NW Indiana but might want to try ewswelding (weldingsupply.com) in elk grove village. grumpy bunch of guys at the desk but they seem to fill a lot of tanks. I think they told me $30-40 to recert a tank. right next to them also in elk grove village is HTP or usaweld. nice guys. quic...
