Re: Cracks in center of weld

Hot short cracking with 4043 is common. Its a base metal dilution issue. I am not smart enough to explain it, maybe someone else here can pick up the ball. I am sure you can Google it.

Re: Welding on a crankshaft

You absolutely will not be able to keep the top seal from being damaged. I would wrap that area in wet rags... These cranks are a dime a dozen. Simple to tear down and replace with new bearings. I have done a couple. Those motors had a corrosion issue in a water passage. Any marine salvage yard will...

To the OP, will you please update this thread when you finish the project. I have a cracked cast iron pan that I'd like to repair. Its a much nicer pan than the lodge, so replacement is not cheap.

I am no expert here. With that said you might investigate whether Al bronze is good where heating and cooling repeatedly are expected.

Does the project require 6061 t6? I've been able to do some pretty aggressive spinning and bending with 5052 and I am not a huge metal working place, just a small marine service shop.

You are saying the 1/2" plate is really a little round piece with a 1/2" diameter and 1/2" thickness? The tubing is 1/2" diameter?

I only use those furick glass cups when I absolutely have to. I seem to break one every time I put it on the torch. Sure is nice in dark tight spaces though. I especially like them if I'm using a mirror to see where I'm going. I dont ha e the luxury of welding on a table though. Usually on my back u...

I cant understand folks who complain about the post flow wasting gas. Granted, the customer pays for my gas but I find the cost of gas inconsequential. It just blows my mind.

Have you ever used a dynasty? Could you post a review of your aspect? Disregard if its not an ac/dc tig machine. I've had my dynasty for 4 years and its getting a ton of hours on it. I'm thinking of picking up another but I want to consider the comparable Lincoln model.

Thanks for your experience and observations. The prototypes i have made were done by heating with a weed burner type rig. I then let it cool. Spun it over my die I guess you would call that, then welded in my bent parts over a void thats cut out with a pattern. I dont know how hot I got them. Hot en...

Re: Annealing and then hardening of 5052 or similar

I am also thinking that it may not really matter in my case. Pontoon companies use this stuff all the time. They bend it, weld it, spin it for end caps, etc. They do things as cheap as possible. I guarantee they dont have any heat treating going on. Perhaps they do this without annealing. Maybe I ju...

Can you hook your tank to the welder at work? This would isolate tank and welder.

Annealing and then hardening of 5052 or similar

Well, let's say you have some 5052 ~.060-~.100. Let's say you anneal it so you can form it to the complex curvy shape you want. How then do you get it back to its pre-annealing (if you will) hardness/strength. I dont really want to put into the airwaves what exactly I am building. Think pontoon type...

Interesting setup. It will work perfect for me. I weld pretty much marine related things. Skegs, outdrives, boarding ladders on a daily basis. I've been using an old stainless sailboat center board propped on sawhorses for a few years. No way to fixture really. This will be great. Also saves time f...

That darn candy store...been needing a welding table. Making one is awful expensive. This is pretty much what I was going to make. Used and priced to sell. I think I need to add my snappy guy to the Christmas card list.
