Re: Hi and request help with purchase decision ??

Hello and welcome vjp. I support all Richard has to say, but I will add one more thing. I jumped right into the deep end with my first Tig - or at least, I thought I did. ACDC inverter, pulse, multiple waveforms, lots of adjustability. Very, very happy, and up until recently, I didn't think I'd chan...

Re: Aluminum Fill for Stud Hole to Re-drill/tap

Before I purchased a Tig welder I repaired several threads with the above mentioned HTS 2000 - the stuff tends to have a bad reputation amongst 'real welders' but for applications like this it works. Makes a neat repair and side-steps that situation where you might start welding on a rare mystery me...

Lovely - a repair after my own heart.

I sink time into this stuff all the time, while the people around me ask "Why are you wasting time? Buy a new one?"

Well done!

Re: Hook in end of filler rod

http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad11/copyriotcreative/Grips_zpszakwufgn.jpg This little Vise Grips is now used exclusively as a holder for the stubs of rods as I use them down the the last little nub. It's really nimble and easy to use. Using these, I can add the filler to the pool all the way u...

Re: Hook in end of filler rod

I tack my rod stubs together and use 'em. Waste not, want not. LIKE! Is it worth the argon or the time? I suspect it isn't, but I used to do the same thing. Started doing it when I began welding, just to prove I could. Nowadays, because the cheap runs deep in me, I tend to grab the stub in a needle...

To continue the theme... My brother works in defence technology. The level of waste is astonishing. Picked up an amazing solid timber shed bench there years ago. "We're switching to all steel benches, come and get a wooden one, they are all being thrown in the skip!" Later, metal chairs an...

Re: Good Day Garbage Picking

What kills scrounging (at a landfill/waste site) is insurance costs. Any time you have people crawling around and picking through stuff you have a risk of someone hurting themselves and then suing. I do my scrounging at the kerb! My latest score is 2X Bosch cordless drills. No charger, but my hobby/...

Well done! I am constantly picking up stuff and putting it to use again. I fear we are about to witness that time when cordless electric takes over completely from petrol/gasoline home and garden tools, because from what I can tell there are people out there who throw away their line trimmers and ch...

Welcome.

If you've just started with aluminium and your first job is cast, you've done well. Any details you can share regarding settings, filler, all that?

Agreed, Exnail. Something to add...how mad does it make you when you see projects on the Instructables website excitedly titled 'Workshop thingamajig project - NO WELDING!' 1) What, because welding is evil or particularly difficult? 2) Ever notice that the stuff that involves no welding always looks...

The channel allowed comments until just very recently. And prior to them being disabled, there were really no crude comments that I noticed. He had all g...

Re: ChuckE2009 , what happened to this channel???

I think that if I hosted a YouTube channel I'd disable comments from day one. YouTube simply isn't a nice place to play, it seems virtually open slather for anyone to get on and sling as much vile, abusive crap as they want. And because it has a long history of this, it seems to attract the sort of ...

Re: why shop at welding supply vs bunnings?

I will second what Rupes has to say - talk to a BOC rep. I started out with Power 10 and then with Supagas. Working with Supagas was great, really liked them. Then one day very hesitantly got in touch with BOC (the Axis of Evil) and they had a rep call me. Their first offer was a G size bottle for t...

I also look at the welds on everything, everywhere I go.

Particularly disappointed with most of the handrail work I see in public spaces. Surely civic pride should dictate that the welding on a handrail at least looks better than something produced by a pigeon with an upset stomach?

Yup. My first 'project' ticked all the wrong boxes. Dreadful fit up, dirty material (didn't clean inside of tubes) plus filler rod was too thin and it was also by first ever experience with out of position welding. The result had me running for the spray paint to cover up my mistakes as quickly as I...
