Re: 18 ga. Sheet metal

Bear, You need to do what us amatuers with lower end machines do. Pick your wire size and then play around with your settings on some 18 guage material until you get the result you need and then go onto the job. Saves me teaching all and sundry within earshot some new words, when unexpected holes ap...

being both tone deaf and having worked on aircraft flight lines before they brought in real hearing protection I've always just tightened mine up until it no longer slips and a couple more turns.
Seems to work for me.

Gday Kym,
Nice work.
I'd be interested on how well that repair lasts, or if it cracks at the HAZ,cast is a funny animal.
Keep me posted please.

Seems I stand corrected.
Wasnt aware they aluminised them after the welding, makes sense though.

Re: When to MIG over TIG?

Nup, you nailed it, speed is the advantage of mig. As for strength of weld, that's dependent on the nut holding the gun, get your act together, correct assembly, gap, travel speed, amps, penetration, weld size and wire selection right and you will have full strenght full penetration welds as strong at...

Re: Aluminium or Stainless Fuel Tank?

I'll swim against the current here and say why not mild steel? Zinc coated, will provide added protection everwhere except the weld and HAZ. This is what the after market long range tank builders use here in oz. For extra protection you could use kreem or por15 tank sealeants. Why steel? Cost Ease o...

Ah yes I do.
However I have a cunning plan which entails buying a real welding table as the current plate is more warped than a Canberra politician and has a groove ;)

Now I read this.
Guess what I did to the plate I use for a welding table on Saturday?
Its got a nice full width groove 3/4 of the way through.

I'm not all that familar with the viking. Having said that its electronic. Try removing the battery for 10 minutes. Also look at the unit and look for delamination or discolouration. Also look for crap covering the sensors and clean off. I have never heard of a panel staying on ,its usually the fact...

Sorry, no pics.. Welded up a busted rusted John Deere mower deck. The welder went a decent way for paying for itself. John Deere eh I think they make them cracked  I bought mine second hand and yep in the last 2 years I've had the deck out of it twice, which is more often than I've changed the...

Looks like mercedes used to use some decent alloy in their pump housings, for the amount of cleaning you didnt do and the age of the pump theres not a lot of crap come out in the welds.
Good outcome.

AED,great idea. The only other thing to add would be oxygen and first aiders trained in its use as well. 2% chance of saving a life with just cpr vs roughly 50% with trained first aiders, AED and oxygen. AEDs are comming down in price every year and only need a monthly battery check and quick look o...

Re: Hand tool repair , any ideas ?

Cut the other prong off and reforge the entire end, clean up and reheat treat.
Thats what I would do.
Just welding will effect the strength of that end, and in all probability will fail at the weld, start from scratch and it should be good as new.
Cheers

I searched the internet for 6 years looking for a negative review on token tools, never found one, so I bought from them. I bought a 200 amp ac/dc tig from them and a few months later a 50 amp plasma. I had an issue not long ago with the foot pedal a quick call to Pete and we had a fix, $4.00 worth ...

I agree with Kym.
Practice although it doesnt produce a cash flow at the time is anything but a waste of money.
Call it a future investment.
That is a nice looking weld by the way, looks like the practice is paying off.
