Re: Union vs. Non-Union Work
I work as a refrigeration fitter. There is a lot of major industry in the area. Think ADM 2 plants. Cargail 3 Plants in town. General Mills. Quaker Oats. DuPont. Rockwell Collins world headquarters. International paper x2. 1 nuke and a coal fired power house. All within 30 min drive. We're spoiled h...

Re: 316 or 309 stick?
I started at about 30 amps and went up in aproximatly 5 amp at a time. Went vertical up and down. As well as horizontal at all possible angles on pipe. Except 6G. Found I started to get a better bead around 50-55 amps. Vertical up needed about 10 amps less to keep from burning through. 309 seemed to...

I work out of a local that keeps us as busy as it can. (I haven't had a vacation in 3 years). The biggest plus is the apreticeship time. You get paid to work and learn. After you turn out you get your con Ed for your license for free. ( minus dues ). All you have to do is show up and be ready to wor...

This is a great line. I've got to save this one to many new things for me to try on cast. I need to get some scrap stuff to work on.

Re: TIG Open Root V-Groove 4G
8 should be plenty big. If you still have troubles adjust your toungsten stick out. If you shorten it up it will force you to maintain good angle. As you walk the cup you will see the arc nip off a little bit of wire and just kinda brush it to the edge of your bead. Keep you bead width less than the...

I once made a thin cast iron repair with oxy setup and brass rod with a flux just for this type of work. But it wasn't something I was going to eat off of.

Slipping the cup on steel can come from the metal being to hot. I fight this on small heavy wall pipe. Also try changing to a larger cup size as you get farther out of the groove.

316 or 309 stick?
Got a new project dumped on me need to weld some mounting plates in a SS mixer for a fertilizer mixer. Plates will be 316 SS approx 4in x 4 in. Not sure if it will be welded on like a pad or set up like a tee joint. Tank wall is on 1/8 in and the customer thinks the tank is 316 but it looks more lik...

Rick do you do that because the weld is harder or can you tell what kind of alum the casting is.

I've heard of doing that for other metals but it never occurred to try it with the cast.

Re: Lightning strike!!
Going through old pics found these. It's a 4 in sch 40 SS line full of a water and SO2. They inject liquid ammonia into it. Apparently it reacts and shakes the pipe a bit. Hammered it down on the angle iron support kinda hard like.

Re: Where to buy socket weld fittings
Shimburg is a major supplier of all pipe and fitting in the Midwest. Try searching the web specifically for pipe wholesale and then look for one that will direct ship with out a minimum order.

Or as long as no one freaks out you might be able to grind a little with a thin wheel into the joint on the second side.
