Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

I'm just about finished with an exhaust for an E30 a friend put an M62TuB44 in. If you check out @greintime3592 on Instagram, I have some videos up there of it. I just got a replacement phone, and didn't back up any pictures or videos offf the old one so I'm starting fresh! Sent from my VS995 using...

Re: 1st tig weld, I think there is hope

For thin stuff, don't start the weld on the edge and unless the fitup is flawless and you jam a lot of heat really quickly to join them, join with filler - lay the rod over the joint, point the torch at the rod tip, jam the pedal until it wets in and walk it forward. To be safe, you can start a pudd...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Pic of the shortened driveshaft after it came back from balancing. My first time doing this, friend of mine was swapping in a 6 speed which is much longer than his 5 but the flange is the same. Needed to take 5" out of it, the seam is in the bottom third in the pic. Somehow managed to do it wit...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Thanks Kym! Yeah agreed on all counts. I almost want it to fail so he can learn his lesson but if they can level it out it will probably seal fine. I actually brought my small bosch router to try to level it out and it was actually going rather well but as I was inching the dept down I just didn't h...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

A week ago I posted on Facebook that I want more practical experience so if my friends need stuff welded, to bring it on. The cost is a large Starbucks and possibly your parts being scrap (ie I guarantee nothing so if it's important, pay an "expert"). It sightly backfired as I was expectin...

Re: Tips welding and help identifying an odd metal

Thanks a lot guys, yeah that tin brazing rod for aluminum sounds like it may work. I've just never seen anything like that and I've done brazing with sil-bronze, but I've never seen outgassing like this except maybe lighting up on aluminum with no argon on DC.

Yep definitely cast, light duty cheap stuff. What is "pot metal"? (I mean in terms of the periodic table)

Re: Tips welding and help identifying an odd metal

Ugh why is my memory so useless, I'm already screwing up the story. Correction: the metal IS faintly magnetic, which is why both times I started out trying on DC but I did later try AC for sanity's sake. The faint magnetism led me to believe it might be some low grade stainless. After that I had no ...

Tips welding and help identifying an odd metal

This is my second time coming across this metal and this time I remembered to ask you guys. Both times I was fixing a broken piece of old shop equipment. First time was a cracked block from the end of a leg of a floodlight. It was very light and the crack showed a fine crystalline structure. It's no...

Re: Dynasty 280DX torch upgrade

Sorry if I missed it but why do you want the CK torch without the hoses? The hoses are one of the best parts! The superflex hose is absolutely delicious. I just got this torch for my 210 and love everything about it. It's more compact than my weldcraft 9/17 flex kit and feels better made (this is su...

Re: Coolmate 1.3 first welds

The way the welder bolts together with the cooler in this cart, it's actually a lot easier to just throw the whole cart into an SUV or minivan than to separate it. The aircooled kit I have is pretty awesome so it should bring a little bit back but yeah if I get lowballed on it I will just keep it ar...

Re: Coolmate 1.3 first welds

Thanks guys! Steve, yeah it's an eye opener. When I got the welder last December, I had no intention of getting a cooler. I looked at it and thought that's for the guys who weld all day long. I just weld for my racecar and some projects here and there. But I'm used to MIG where you just hold the gar...

Coolmate 1.3 first welds

Picked up my Christmas present to myself, a Coolmate 1.3 and small runner cart. I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread because I am not a braggart but I had a hell of a time finding feedback on the cart and cooler so I thought maybe this would help others. First on the cart. It's really expens...

Re: 1st tig weld, I think there is hope

I did it the same way, the learning curve is much steeper but once you've got a handle on aluminum, try steel and you will drool over how easy it will be. But the problem is that everything that matters with steel, REALLY matters with aluminum so you have to be extremely critical of yourself. It's v...

Looks great for a start! Learn to move your hand like an assembly line robot rather than tilting the torch, to move the weld forward. And don't be afraid to ease off the pedal as you notice the work heatsoaking

So honestly, after a year, how many of those advanced features of the Dynasty do you use? Composed with Swype on mobile. not responsible for typos. All of them. But to be fair, I'm a nerd. I started cranking settings one way of the other as soon as I was able to do basic beads. Now, how much benefi...

Re: Water cooled torches: CK vs Weldcraft, stubby gas lens?

Thanks guys. Yeah I'd definitely get the 25, my air cooled is a 12 and I want more reach. I do have a CK microtorch with the superflex cable and it's a dream. How do the watercooled bits work? Can the stubby gas lens kit be used with it? Or does that part need to be special for water cooled torches ...

Water cooled torches: CK vs Weldcraft, stubby gas lens?

Hey guys, I'm looking to pick up a coolmate 1.3 in short order and I'm trying to decide which torch to get. I currently have the modular aircooled kit from Weldcraft letting me make pretty much any torch I like from a button head 9 to a fullsize flex neck 17. I also have Jody's gas lens kits for the...

Re: the million dollar question !!!

When starting out, don't worry about how to clean the material, grind the tungsten, replace the gas etc. Do those things matter? Yeah sure. But that's when it's already basically working for you. In your case it's just the basics. You're holding too much torch angle and arc length.

Wife bought some canned Perrier so I used the rare opportunity when we have cans in the house to try this. 3/32 lanth, 60 amp peak (dont think I ever came close to full tilt but I was doing a heavy pedal dance regardless), triangle wave, 200hz, 75% EN.
