Re: What are you guys paying for gasses in your area?

so I just got all my oxygen cylinders taken care of.
$16 for a 20CF pony tank, $28 for a 125CF
my 300 CF was way out of test date (1967) so they have to hydro test, put a new valve on and then $35 for the fill.

Bike seatpost.

While there is great info on testing the aluminum and welding to avoid killing all of the heat treat; as an engineer, and as an avid biker, I think the reinforcement plates under the main plate are going to be way too big. I think a woman rider is going to want the seat lower than the reinforcement ...

Re: Acetelyne steel welding

While I to mourn the demise of oxy/fuel welding, IMO it is not cheap, (I don’t think you have bought acetylene recently) nor easy to do right especially in an auto body situation. It is far easier for a novice to weld in some patches with a $90 Horrible Freight wire welder than an oxy/fuel setup.

Re: brazing

One of the jobs I interviewed for last year (didn’t get) was doing work for a division of Melling, the oil pump company. They are an OE supplier to all auto manufactures. This division did a lot of pick up tube assemblies and they are “furnace brazed” together. I got to tour the plant and watched th...

Re: brazing

I watched a video of a guy in England who gas fusion welds all his sheet metal work. The guy was an artist with a small torch. His reasoning is you can then metal work panels with uniform results, rather than grinding down a weld bead, having uneven thicknesses and the need to use filler. I would st...

Re: Can you cut aluminum plate with acetylene torch?

I have both a Sthil gas demo saw and a metal cutting circular saw. I have been told that a carbide wood blade turned backwards works well on aluminum. Unfortunately nobody has given me any 1” plate (aluminum or otherwise to cut) So if someone would please give me some 1” aluminum plate I will report...

HI all!

Time to introduce myself. I like to weld, as a hobby not my job. My entire career WAS automotive assembly tooling, primarily resistance spot weld assembly tooling for automotive undercarriage and body panels. Unfortunately a large portion of the secondary automotive engineering is now done offshore....

Re: Welding hoods

I bought a nice Jackson auto darkening helmet back in 1998 when I bought my first real MIG welder. I worked great until 2009. I was unemployed at the time and ended up with a HF for a replacement. It has really crappy headgear. I took off the crappy flame graphics and put my “welding tips and tricks...

Re: What are you guys paying for gasses in your area?

Sorry that's $196 not $1896. Yeah I figured, I was quoted $325 for a 125CF argon I thought was pretty high. I bought a 250CF argon of CL a few years back for $100. I had to drive a bit but picked up a new full 125 CF 75/25 for $130, so I am set for a while on MIG. I will most likely just get my 250...

What are you guys paying for gasses in your area?

What are you guys paying for gasses in your area? Shielding gas, oxygen, acetylene? I need to have a 250CF oxygen and a # 5 acetylene hydro tested and filled and I about had heart failure. I inquired on a 250Cf argon mix tank and they wont sell a 250, I about had a second heart attack at the price f...

First weld after 2 years.

Despite being a decent hobby welder for over 10 years, I took a MIG welding class at Lincoln electric about 2 years ago. I purchased a powerMIG 350 welder direct thru them at dealer cost. The welder sat unused until today. I needed to repair a gas pedal on my son’s go-kart and I haven’t MIG welded i...

Lead size choice.

I stick weld almost never. I am about to put my new MIG welder into service and it has stick weld function. Without spending money I don’t have, I have my choice of 5AGW leads that are 10’ and 12’ or 6AGW leads that are 16’ and 20’ respectively. I am leaning towards the longer ones, but just thought...

I also wondered about the abrupt ending. I will be anxiously awaiting all of the power Mig 350 videos. I as a graduate of Lincoln’s welding classes I can buy any Lincoln welder at dealer cost directly from Lincoln. I previously had a sp170 that I lost in a fire, I had planned on replacing it with a ...

Hey, This is the one I was talking about, http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/brazing-copper-to-steel.html Its not the kind of brazing or braze welding or whatever, you would use on, say, a cast iron part. ( There is some confusion in the terms. I call this Silver soldering and the cast iron one Br...

I noticed that as well but I also noticed it looked like he was using drops of material. The compressor looks dated. Perhaps the cost prohibited cutting into a larger piece, or purchasing material for the job. There was enought material left at the top of the arc that he could have brought it aroun...

I may be the only one here that is bugged by this, but this video is a good example of why we need engineers. When Jody was cutting out the large radius he cut out a semi circle. He forgot about the difference in tangent points between the large circle and the small one. When it’s done, to me it wil...

For aluminum my MIG welder (Lincoln power MIG 350) has pulse on pulse mode that varies the cleaning action and makes TIG like welds easy, but only on aluminum.
