So the columns are 5" sched 40 and the snot is some kind of galvanised skinny wall water pipe that is about 3mm (1/8") less in outside diameter.

So I cut about 500mm (20") off the columns to get to sound material, and welded the same amount of snot on to restore original length, then weld on foot plates. Butt welds done with tig to avoid unpredictable results with stick due to hi/lo and wall thickness mismatch. Thorough prep of all surfaces before welding. Foot plates welded on with triple run fillets using 7018 3.2mm (1/8") stick rods.

We started painting, customer stopped us stating he will do it.
